Thanks for the comment, Joe. I'm not sure if you were aware or not, but the menu I'm using is available as a plugin, and I am using it in K2.
The Multi-level Navigation plugin is what I use to generate the menu. I'm actually a major contributor to the project now, building off of the work by Ryan Hellyer, and implementing Superfish. To get the full effect of that menu you'll need to download the current beta. The hardest part is going to be the CSS to style it, but the plugin homepage provides a tool to help generate and style it for you.
In regards to spammers, I believe I've finally nipped that problem in the bud by implementing reCAPTCHA. I was trying to avoid that route, but the spammers were still getting past my other attempts. Ultimately I figured this beat disabling comments.
I hope this information helps you out.

I had a go a go at NAVT and got lost
I know what you mean by comments
The spammers have forced me to remove comments altogether
